THE OLD FOUNDATION

As a kid, I once spent a summer helping my grandfather rebuild his barn. I remember wanting to jump straight into the exciting work—new boards, fresh paint and repairing the roof. Instead, my grandfather spent most of the first day walking around the barn, pointing out cracks, sagging supports and places where the foundation had settled. What seemed like a delay was the most important part of the project. If a barn starts leaning, the first thing a contractor does isn't repaint the walls or replace the roof. He inspects the foundation. Until you understand what's wrong underneath, every repair is temporary.
Paul begins Ephesians 2 the same way. Before he shows us what Christ has done, he reminds us of what was broken beneath the surface of our lives. We were separated from God, without hope and unable to save ourselves.
This isn't meant to shame us—it's meant to humble us. Most of us would rather fix symptoms than foundations. We work harder at our jobs, try to become better Christians, improve our finances, or manage our habits. Those all matter, but none of them address our deepest need. The problem isn't simply that we need improvement—we need rescue, and this isn't something we can solve on our own. Sin separates us from God, and no amount of hard work can bridge that gap.
Remembering where God found us keeps us grateful and dependent on Him. It reminds us that our standing before God is based entirely on His grace, not our performance. The stronger our awareness of our former condition, the deeper our appreciation for God's mercy.
APPLICATION: Take time this week to reflect on how God has changed your life. Write down three specific ways He has transformed your heart, priorities or relationships. Thank Him for the grace that rescued you when you could not rescue yourself.
PRAYER: Father, thank You for meeting me in my brokenness and bringing me into Your family. Protect me from pride and self-reliance and help me never forget the grace You've shown me. May remembering where I came from deepen my gratitude for what You have done. Amen.
